Have we all just fallen off the face of the earth? |

No, I've been studying.
Also, I have been playing around making music videos.
In about a week I'll be traveling to Las Vegas for a vacation. When I get back, both my daughter and I will be searching earnestly for full time jobs. |

| I too have been absent. I have been still dealing with chronic bronchitis and laryngitis, which has renedered me almost completely unable to teach. In fact I am not supposed to be talking at all. I have been busy though. I have been using the vocal down time (and still not feeling great) to stick to a regular fitness routine and that is really helping. I have been spening about 1.5 to 2 hrs per day, 6 days a week at the gym. I have spent a long time working up to that. I still an rather puny, but definitely getting better. That is time that I used to spend at the computer or in class. I also have been spending a lot of time at the computer developing course and writing course content. It is very slow and time consuing nad tedious, yet I like it, and it is necessary to my business, but it does not go fast! |

It sounds like you have been quite busy.
I'm sure the time at the gym is boosting your immune system. |

I hope you get to feeling better Data. Maybe when fall comes and it cools down and the air quality seems to improve.
I know being sick for a long time is very depressing. Exercising is great for combating that too! |

| I'm still around, just really busy with work. Between working at the studio and my own side stuff I've been shooting pics almost 7 days a week. |

And the BSDs and Linux are very similar, with the BSD operating systems having preceded Linux.
But the Linux scene has changed quite a bit since I quit exploring it two or three years ago. The basics are still pretty much the same, but there have been tremendous improvements. |

WD, I used to be in tech consulting and so I know how much time we must invest in constantly relearnign and updating our skill sets. Even though I was good at it at one time, I have not kept up those skills and so,my knowledge is no longer viable since technology is constantly changing, but I know what you are going through. I engjoy techoogy and learnign, but trying to keep up constantly can get tiring - and old - at least it did for me.
I know nothing about MAC systems or Linux, althoug I have been thinking I shoud learn a thing or two about Linux. When I need tech answers sometimes I search out online tech message boars which are product specific. That is often helpful. |

That is often helpful. | DM, if you do decide to learn a little (or a lot) about Linux, I would recommend several books. While the first one is for "non-geeks," while you obviously are a geek, it's a worthwhile read. I've not purchased a copy yet, but there are a number of either new or used available from Amazon. Read the customer reviews of the books as well.
Ubuntu Linux is the version which is "hot" right now. Counted ten different books about it during my last trip to the local Barnes & Noble. Red Hat Linux is also worth learning, although it's now mostly oriented to enterprise applications. A community-supported version of Red Hat Linux, known as Fedora, is available as a free version of Red Hat.
Ubuntu, though, seems to be the "super hot" version right now, so three recommendations as to books:
"Ubuntu Linux for Non-Geeks" (and make sure it is the third edition)
http://www.amazon.com/Ubuntu-Non-Geeks-Pain-Free-Project-Based-Get-Things-Done/dp/1593271808/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217874953&sr=1-1
Second book is "Hacking Ubuntu"
http://www.amazon.com/review/product/047010872X/ref=pr_all_summary_cm_cr_acr_txt?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
and the third and last book I'll recommend to you is "Ubuntu Hacks"
http://www.amazon.com/review/product/0596527209/ref=dp_db_cm_cr_acr_txt?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
Finish these three books, and you'll probably know more about Linux, at least in its Ubuntu incarnation, than you ever cared to know!
Oops! Forgot to mention Ubuntu is a "Live CD" which allows you to boot and run Ubuntu from the CD/DVD drive instead of installing it to your computer. You can install it should you wish to do so in the future. Think the "Non-Geeks" book includes a CD, but it is "Hardy Heron" version 8.0.4 - There were a few bug fixes after that, so the current one is 8.04.1. And the next version on the way is code named "Intrepid Ibex," and I'm not sure about the version number. It might be 8.10, but not sure. |

Hi Shell. In spite of their being little to no actual activity. Yes, it is still active. I check it a few times a day. It seems some of us have been really busy and the rest have also totally forgotten about it.
It seems nothing happens if I do not keep pouring creative content into it and I have been a bit occupied to invest that time lately, but I will develop more. I wish others would pour their creativity into it. I really mis the activity and I miss all of you. |

Hi shell,
We are still here! This board is too special to wither and die. Quality always lasts and endures over the long haul, sometimes doing so quietly! I think many of us have had a lot going on and I think the deeper topics sometimes require more time thought and energy than someone might have at the moment.
Things will take off again! They always do.
It's good to see you back here. |

Yes, have faith. Not going anywhere. Just sometimes there is lots of activity and sometimes, not so much. If you guys want to just chit-chat, something not so heavy, feel free. There is the chatboard on the home page and also chit can can go in the genral section (titled varied expression - this one).
I am working online right now and I check in between students, which does nto give me much time for in-depth, but to touch base and chat.
BTW, thanks for the references WD. When I get some time to look into it, that will be helpful.
ANd another thing - speaking of what is going on now. You may or may not bew aware that the President of South Korea has a new initiative requiring everyone to learn English. That is good for us English teachers. I have contracted with a Korean company as an online instructor to Korean businesses. The time difference can be a challenge. |

| I don;t really know that there are "preferred" topics. The categories are labledd nad should speak for themselves. Aside from the place to start is the Greetings category and introduce yourself. |
